Email and campaigns

Email campaigns

Contact lists, CSV import, segments, sending a campaign, the deliverability check, email verification and reports — newsletters and promotional mail on Meghly.

Campaigns send newsletters, offers or announcements to your customers at once. The flow: make a list and add contacts, make segments if you need them, then write the campaign, send it and read the report.

Sending a campaign needs at least one Verified domain. First add a domain and its DNS records as in Business email.

Making a list

On the Lists page, click New list and fill in:

  • Name — the list's name, for you.
  • Public name — the name recipients see on the unsubscribe page (empty: the name above).
  • Description — a short description.
  • Double opt-in — when on, contacts added one at a time first get a mail to confirm, and join the list only after clicking Yes, subscribe me. (CSV imports are not affected.)

A contact is Subscribed, Unsubscribed, Bounced, Complained or Waiting for confirmation. Campaigns go to Subscribed contacts only.

Adding and importing contacts

Open the list: Add a contact adds one at a time, Import CSV many at once. The CSV file's rules:

  • One column must be named email.
  • first name and last name columns are recognised.
  • Any other column (such as company or city) is kept with the contact and can be used in mail as {{ company }}.
  • A file holds at most 50,000 rows.
contacts.csv
email,first name,last name,city
rahim@example.com,Rahim,Uddin,Dhaka
karim@example.com,Karim,Hasan,Chattogram

After the import you see how many were added, updated, already on the list and rejected. Someone who unsubscribed earlier stays unsubscribed, even when imported again.

Keep only people who agreed to hear from you on your lists. Mail to bought or unconsented addresses brings complaints and bounces, and can stop your campaign by itself.

Segments: sending to part of a list

To send to some contacts rather than the whole list, make a segment on the Segments page — such as "customers in Dhaka who opened mail last month". A segment draws from one list and has one or more conditions (Match chooses all of them or any):

ConditionExample
A column's valuecity is Dhaka, or company is filled
A taghas, or does not have, a tag
Opened an emailin the last 30 days, or not
Clicked a linkin the last 30 days, or not
Joined the liston or after a date, or before
Verificationthe address was verified as valid

Making and sending a campaign

Create a campaign on the Campaigns page. It has two steps:

1. Details & audience — who it goes to, and from whom:

  • Send to these lists; But not to these lists to leave people out; And these saved segments to add segments.
  • From name, Sender local part (such as news) and Verified sender domain make the sender's address, such as news@shop.com.bd. For replies to another address, set Reply-to.

2. Content — the message:

  • Subject and Preheader (the short text next to the subject in the inbox).
  • HTML and Plain text — keep both, as some mail apps show only text.
  • Track opens and Track clicks are on by default.

Meghly adds an unsubscribe link to the foot of every message (your own {{unsubscribe_url}} is used if you put one in). The List-Unsubscribe headers behind Gmail's and Outlook's "Unsubscribe" button are always set too.

The deliverability check

Before sending, Meghly checks the campaign and scores it from 0 to 100. It looks at the domain's SPF/DKIM/DMARC, the sender, the subject line, the text, the links (blocklisted or not), images against text, a spam filter test and the recipients. Each part comes with advice. A low score never blocks sending, but asks you to confirm first.

When to send

In When, Send now starts sending within a minute; Schedule sends at the time you choose.

Sending speed

Mail goes out in batches of 25. To build a new domain's reputation slowly (warm-up), at most 50 messages go on the first day, then the daily cap grows (100, 200, 300, 500 … 10,000) and after a few weeks there is no daily cap. Your plan's hourly and daily limits apply as well.

Thousands of messages from a new domain on day one mostly end up in spam. During warm-up, start with your most active customers.

Automatic pause

After at least 200 messages, if complaints reach 0.3% or hard bounces pass 5%, Meghly pauses the campaign by itself and shows Paused by the platform — protecting your domain's reputation. Clean the list (see email verification below) and resume.

Reports

Open a campaign to see Sent, Delivered, Opened, Clicked, Bounced, Complained and Unsubscribed, how often each link was clicked, a chart of the first 48 hours, and every recipient's state. Download CSV downloads the report; Pause sending and Resume sending stop and restart a running campaign.

The suppression list

Addresses that hard bounced, complained of spam or unsubscribed go to the Suppressions page by themselves, and no more mail goes to them (for 3 days after a soft bounce). To stop mail to an address yourself, use Add suppression.

Email verification

Before sending to an old list or one from elsewhere, verify its addresses. On the Verification page, check one address, or upload a file (a CSV with an email column, or one address per line; up to 50,000).

Verification checks the address's form, that the domain exists and accepts mail (MX), whether it is a disposable address, a role address such as info@, and typos (gmial.com brings a "Did you mean" suggestion). Each result is Valid, Risky, Invalid or Unknown, and Results CSV downloads them.

How many addresses you can verify each month depends on your plan's credits; the page shows how many are left.
